Noam Chomsky on the Role of the Educational System - March 1989 www.amazon.com Watch the full lecture: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Noam Chomsky is an Institute Professor and professor emeritus of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. freegovreports.com The goal of education, Chomsky argues, is to produce free human beings whose values are not accumulation and domination, but rather free association on terms of equality. Closing of the American Mind was published in 1987, five years after Bloom published an essay in The National Review about the failure of universities to serve the needs of students. With the encouragement of Saul Bellow, his colleague at the University of Chicago, he expanded his thoughts into a book about a life, Ive led that critically reflected on the current state of higher education in American universities. His friends and admirers imagined the work would be a modest success, as did Bloom, who recognized his publishers modest advance to complete the project as a lack of sales confidence. Yet on the momentum of strong initial reviews, including one by Christopher Lehmann-Haupt in the New York Times and an op-ed piece by syndicated conservative commentator George Will entitled A How-To Book for the Independent it became an unexpected best seller, eventually selling close to half a million copies in hardback and remaining at number one on the New York Times Non-fiction Best Seller list for four months.

Forces of Evil - Bilal Philips #1 - This profound presentation discusses Evil in our world from its origin, how it affects us at the present, and what could result from it in the future. People who believe in God turn away from that belief. How? When personal tragedy strikes, people try to find reason and rhymes to their tragedy, and often times end up rejecting God. Do you know someone who has made this mistake? It is commonly misunderstood that Satan became a disbeliever because of his disobedience of Allah. If so, does any type of disobedience make you a disbeliever? Then what of Adam, who also disobeyed God? Is he a disbeliever? What exactly brings one to disbelief? If God is so powerful, why does evil exist? Why is there so much emphasis on Evil rather than Good? Does pleasure in this life necessarily coincide with punishment in the next? Why are some prone to suffering while others are untouched? This discussion presents the concept of Evil and how one can deal with it realistically. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips was born in Jamaica, but grew up in Canada, where he accepted Islam in 1972. He completed a diploma in Arabic, and a BA from the College of Islamic Disciplines Usool Ad-Deen at the Islamic Univeristy of Madeenah in 1979. At the University of Riyadh, College of Education, he completed a MA in Islamic Theology in 1985, and in the department of Islamic Studies at the University of Wales, he completed a Ph.D. in Islamic Theology in 1994. Since 1994 he has founded and directed the Islamic b...b

Greg Lukianoff of FIRE - The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education FIRE was launched a decade ago to defend free speech against a wave of campus speech codes, bizarre orientation requirements, and punishments against students and teachers alike from exercising their First Amendment rights. Though political correctness has moved off the front page since then, the structural intolerance remains very much in place, says FIRE President Greg Lukianoff. Lukianoff, a graduate from American University and Stanford Law School, has been with FIRE since 2001, helping the organization win several legal and public relations battles against censorial universities. Even so, he says, a full 77 percent of public colleges and universities maintain laughably unconstitutional codes. In this Reason.tv interview, conducted by Reason Editor in Chief Matt Welch at the FreedomFest conference in Las Vegas, Lukianoff talks about FIREs successes and sketches out the speech battles yet to be won. Approximately 4 minutes. Shot and edited by Dan Hayes. Scroll down for embed code, iPod, HD, and audio versions.
