Searching for Earthlike Worlds For centuries, human beings have pondered this question. Medieval scholars speculated that other worlds must exist and that some would harbor other forms of life. In our time, advances in science and technology have brought us to the threshold of finding an answer to this timeless question. The recent discovery of numerous planets around stars other than the sun confirms that our solar system is not unique. Indeed, these exoplanets appear to be common in our galactic neighborhood. The exoplanets we have discovered so far are giants, like Jupiter and Saturn. They are unlikely to support life as we know it. But b...b

A New Era In Exoplanet Science - Please join us on Facebook for the latest science news and videos: tinyurl.com ESOcast 20: Richest planetary system discovered - A new era in exoplanet science Release date: 24 August 2010. Astronomers using ESO instruments have discovered a remarkable extrasolar planetary system that has some striking similarities to our own Solar System. At least five planets are orbiting the Sun-like star HD 10180, and the regular pattern of their orbits is similar to that observed for our neighbouring planets. One of the new extrasolar worlds could be only 1.4 times the mass of the Earth, making it the least massive exoplanet ever found. This video podcast explains how these faraway planets were detected and exactly what we know about them. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Astronomers using ESOs world-leading HARPS instrument have discovered a planetary system containing at least five planets, orbiting the Sun-like star HD 10180. The researchers also believe the system has two other planets, one of which would have the lowest mass ever found, making the system similar to our own Solar System in terms of the number of planets. Furthermore, the scientists find that the location of the planets follows a regular pattern, as also seen in our own Solar System The team of astronomers used the HARPS spectrograph, attached to ESOs 3.6-metre telescope at La Silla, Chile. HARPS is an instrument with b...b

The Stuff Of Legend - Please join us on Facebook for the latest science news and videos: tinyurl.com Hubblecast 35: The Stuff Of Legend. Gearing up for the 20th anniversary of the legendary space observatory, Dr. J takes a look at the story of the NASAESA Hubble Space Telescope. Born of an ambitious idea, it took decades for Hubble to become a reality. The project was complex and often faced huge setbacks but, ultimately, the powerful telescope took to the skies aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery on 24 April 1990. Look back through the decades with this the first of two special Hubble 20th anniversary Hubblecasts. And stay tuned for the next anniversary Hubblecast. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Hubble is neither the first telescope in space, nor will it be the last, but it is the only one that can be serviced by astronauts and this unique, intimate relationship between human and machine, combined with the observatorys storied history makes Hubble the stuff of legend. This year, we celebrate 20 years of Hubble in orbit. Our fascination with the starry skies can be traced back to the earliest human civilisations. In antiquity, the Greeks and Romans were so taken with the heavens that they lent the names of their gods to the planets of the Solar System. Much later, our fascination with the skies was fuelled by the invention of the telescope and, much later still, this led to the development of space b...b

The Galaxy Evolution Explorer - Please join us on Facebook for the latest science news and videos: tinyurl.com The Galaxy Evolution Explorer GALEX is an orbiting space telescope observing galaxies in ultraviolet light across 10 billion years of cosmic history. A Pegasus rocket launched GALEX into orbit in 2003. Although originally planned as a 29-month mission, the NASA Senior Review Panel in 2006 recommended that the mission lifetime be extended. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- GALEXs observations are telling scientists how galaxies, the basic structures of our Universe, evolve and change. Additionally, GALEX observations are investigating the causes of star formation during a period when most of the stars and elements we see today had their origins. Led by the California Institute of Technology, GALEX is conducting several first-of-a-kind sky surveys, including an extra-galactic beyond our galaxy ultraviolet all-sky survey. During its mission GALEX will produce the first comprehensive map of a Universe of galaxies under construction, bringing us closer to understanding how galaxies like our own Milky Way were formed. GALEX is also identifying celestial objects for further study by ongoing and future missions and GALEX data now populates a large, unprecedented archive available to the entire astronomical community and to the general public. Scientists would like to understand when the stars that we see today and b...b

A Sharper View Of The Universe - Please join us on Facebook for the latest science news and videos: tinyurl.com ESOcast 13: A sharper view of the Universe with the VLT Interferometer. In principle, the larger a telescopes mirror, the finer the details it can see. Continuing to increase the size of telescope mirrors is not an easy task, so astronomers have come up with a new technology to see even finer details: interferometry. This observational technique combines the light received by two or more telescopes and allows them to act as a single unit with a mirror diameter equivalent to the distance between the telescopes. Engineers designed the VLT so that it can also be used as an interferometer. Along with the four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes, four mobile 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes ATs were included in the overall VLT concept to form the Very Large Telescope Interferometer VLTI. The ATs can move between 30 different stations, and at present, the telescopes can form groups of two or three for interferometry. --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com • www.youtube.com --- Imagine looking up at the night sky and seeing details on the surface of a star millions of millions of kilometres away. Imagine having eyesight so keen that you could check out the surroundings of a black hole. Using ESOs Very Large Telescope Interferometer at Paranal, astronomers are now making these fantasies a reality. Each of the four VLT Unit Telescopes has a primary mirror b...b
